PERANAN JARINGAN SUNGAI SEBAGAI JALUR PERDAGANGAN DI KALIMANTAN SELATAN PADA PAROH KEDUA ABAD XIX

Abstract


Up to recent time rivers in South Kalimantan become one of the important transportation infrastructures due to their connecting function between the hinterland and foreland. This article aimed to depict the role of the riverine network to trading activity in South Kalimantan by second half of nineteenth century. Through the rivers, various agricultural and forestry products from the hinterland were transported to Banjarmasin port and furthermore shipped interisland by sea transport. On the same rivers the distribution of goods to meet the daily needs of the hinterland inhabitants took place. The important role of the rivers evoked the authorities of Banjarese kingdoms competed to control and occupy every single riverine network in their region. Many conflicts happened between the kings or their family and the Netherlands-Indies government was provoked to exploit this situation. It was then the colonial government that finally became the prominent river network authority.
