Social scientists have conceptualized several stages of sociocultural transformation as societal development. One version modified in this article constitutes a typology of preindustrial and industrial societies which consists of one, hunting & gathering societies; two, pastoral societies; three, village agrarian societies; four, advanced traditional agrarian societies; and five, industrial societies; and six, postindustrial societies. To analyse the sociocultural transformation which happens in the Indonesian society, one has to observe and consider the long historical background which produces social heterogeneity. Thus, the direction and ideals of sociocultural transformation can be identified and conceptualized.

Community Based Management (CBM) makes people as the one who has a main role in the natural resource management. This management involves local people in planning, executing and also enjoying the result of that natural resource management. The basic principle of SBM is the government empowers the potency of local wisdom available in an area and make it as the principle of the coastal resource management. CBM can be seen in Awig-Awig Tradition in East Lombok and Sasi Tradition in Middle Maluku. Awig-Awig is a convention of East Lombok people. This convention becomes a written traditional law legalized by Village Regulation containing rules to regulate coastal resource management along with the sanction if it is broken. Awig-Awig is highly obeyed by East Lombok people that makes it suitable for empowering local people to manage their natural resources. Meanwhile, Sasi tradition on in Middle Maluku can be simply described as prohibition and license of catching fish in a certain period. As Awig-Awig in East Lombok, Sasi is also legalized by the traditional law and has sanction for those who break the law. These two traditions, Awig-Awig Tradition in East Lombok and Sasi Tradition di Middle Maluku, are both aimed at preserving the natural resources so that it can be the basic principle in Coastal Resources Community Based Management.

The focus of analysis in this paper is about how the power of the powerful is deconstructed by people in the peripheral sphere. The male protagonist, Tan Peng Liang, is a peripheral Chinese man who does not only deconstruct the central power controlled by powerful ruler of different race, but he also deconstructs the power of the Chinese committee officially established by the colonizer. On the other side, Tinung, ca bau kan Jodo River, is a poor, illiterate Javanese woman who deconstructs Tan Peng Liang’s power. Using Derridean deconstructive approach towards the text, it can also be known that the deconstructive attempts applied by Tan Peng Liang tend to be deliberate, full of calculated power, using all means, with the purpose of gaining profit and power. On the other side, Tinung’s deconstructive attempts tend to be accidental, soft and natural, based on the power of the powerless, but have no purpose of gaining profit or power for herself.

This aticle presents the discussion on Kartini as an Indonesian nationalist heroine who is still becoming public debate. It is very important to trace the historical records of Kartini’s activities in connection with her dreams to promote the life quality of her nation. It can be stated that Kartini has an important role to open the first gate for the rising Indonesian consciousness through her competence as a cultural diplomat by proposing her letters which were sent to her friends in the Netherlands. Finally, her dream came true when “Kartini Schools” were opened in Semarang, Bogor, Batavia, and Madiun in 1913-1914, and her ideas became the inspiring ideology of the Indonesian nationalism movements which arose after Kartini died on 17th September 1904.

This paper is aimed to analyse critically towards a film entitled “The Greatest Showman” related to its content which is problematic in its way to represent those “unique” persons. This film is created based on true story about P. T. Barnum, a politician and a business man in performing arts production. As a text in the cultural studies, this movie brings a discourse that can show how the reality is, especially in the field of entertainment and performing arts business. People considered as a “unique,” or maybe “weird,” always be narrated as the other, beyond the normal. They will be shown as an object to be laughed. From this point, I employed critical discourse analysis from Norman Fairclough, concerning in language used within this movie. We, then, would see how those “unique” persons will be placed as the other in very subtile way.

Barong Using is a performance art which is native to the Using community. Barong Using is used as a sacred necessity for clean village rituals. Rituals are held twice a year. The Ider Earth Ritual on the 2nd of Shawwal and the moon village salvation ritual were recited. The cultural development of bringing the art of barong performance functions as a sacred and profane need. There are efforts to optimize the art of barong performance by the use of tourism. The problems contained in this study are related to discussing (1) the history of Barong Kemiren's performance in which it examines ritual processions with socio-cultural values; and (2) efforts to optimize the art of barong performance later using communities in 1996-2018 as the use of tourism. The research method used is the historical research method by using a cultural anthropology approach to study cultural change and using structural functionalism theory to analyze the shift in barong function socially as a result of tourism. The results of this discussion, the optimization of the art of barong performance is packaged in the interrelationships of the five pillars that support the development of tourism and creative industries, namely, the state, art and ritual actors, supporting communities, industry, and religious leaders. These pillars can provide the right input so that a good response emerges from entrepreneurs, bureaucrats, cultural practitioners, and practitioners of traditional and ritual arts. Now the art of barong performance has undergone many changes starting from the structure of performances and interludes which accompany.

The understanding towards values, norms ana culture of societies is a crucial matter nowadays considering the close distance among countries in the world. This phenomenon is undoubtedly considered as the result of the advancement of technology distributed and understood by people around the world as a big leap to comprehend societies with their various culture and customs. Thus, the understanding towards multiculturalism is an important issue in global societies to avoid prejudice and stereotypes of other ethnic and tribes. One of the ways is studying the values of multiculturalism either implicitly or explicitly through the work of literature as a reflection of human life. Literary work is regarded as an excellent medium for studying the richness of human nature and its culture considering the fact that only a few people are fortunate to have the opportunity to see and experience other culture. Time and capital constraints have given literary work spaces to accommodate someone's interest in experiencing values, norms and culture of other societies in different areas of the world.

The identity of a region is an important thing to stay legible for the present and the future. One of the things which play a role in the legibility of the region's identity is the facade of building. This facade is the first component that can be directly observed by the people to get an overall picture of the region. One of the most important historical regions in Yogyakarta is Kotagede. As a result of various demands, there was a change of facade in this region. This study observes the change of facade where it was a group of buildings north side of the Market (Loring Market), a location where Ki Ageng Pemanahan lived in the 16th century. The research method we used is observing the location, interviewing, sketching based on the interviews, and making a more detailed description. The data collected is then analyzed to get a conclusion and to explain the phenomenon in this region. The result shows a change of facade at the Loring Market location. It occurred due to the changes in heirs, the development of functional demands, natural disasters, and the government arrangement. It also led to an adjustment of community responses to the region.

A slogan is made to support the image of the organization or personal identity, as well as the city. The study was based on literature sources lhat have been used to investigate the meaning of the slogan "Semarang Setara" according to the stakeholders. Meaning has been officially determined by the local government which means that Semarang will be able to place themselves equal to the other metropolitan cities in Indonesia. There is also an acronym SEmarang koTA sejahfeRA (Semarang Welfare City). Many responses come from academics who want to built the city of Semarang as Renaissance city on the one hand, and others expect the city ofSemarangs built based on environment al base for suslainable development paradigm. Meanwhile, there are many negative responses comparing semarang with other cities that face profanity. Based on the background conditions of mulliculturalism in Indonesia in general, then I propose the perspective of multiculluralism in the slogan "Semarang Setara". The proposed model is autonomous and critical multiculluralism as a frame of reference for stakeholders to make Semarang as a place for people to live is humanistic and harmonious environment.

ATAP HIJAU - Sebuah Kajian Asimilasi Budaya Berkebun dan Bermukim pada Rumah Tropis
Yuliani, Sri

Array
At present the portrait of land use in several cities is dominated by settlements or dwellings. Settlements in tropical climates have the potential to support the environment for thriving plants. Therefore, research that is oriented to optimizing the tropical climate in the settlement sector is very important because in the science of architecture designing buildings is very necessary to consider the harmony of buildings, climate and humans. The culture of Indonesian society from generation to generation is a tradition that needs to get space side by side with the fulfillment of residential needs. Gardening culture is an effort to meet food needs, while living culture is an effort to meet the needs of the board, so that both are primary human needs. The research objective is to study the prospect of the assimilation of the culture of gardening and living through quantitative and qualitative paradigms. The focus of the study determined the relationship between the two variables with statistical analysis through the correlation of people's appreciation of gardening activities with income level, in the statistical test analysis using the chi square method. The results of the quantitative analysis continued with efforts to find reasons for causal relationships through in-depth interviews. The results of the study concluded that there was a correlation between the appreciation of the community and the level of income in supporting the assimilation of the culture of gardening and living in tropical homes. The problem of limited land is the cause of the lack of assimilation of the culture of gardening and living in low-income communities.

NILAI-NILAI KARAKTER DALAM PEMBELAJARAN APRESIASI SENI BERBASIS MULTIKULTURAL

Cultural values in accordance with the substance a/education which is to educate the nation as a whole, have changed direction into a value-and-job oriented human beings. Going to school or college, a person is only to get the predicate of "pass" with apiece of evident "certificate", instead of becoming an educated intelligent man intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. Such reality raises various concerns among education observers. Indonesia is gradually losing its national character. The issue of national character is a question of culture. Therefore, the character education should also be multiculturally based, -which is implicitly inherent in "learning about the arts ", "learning the arts ", and "learning through the arts ". Art education has a strategic position, so it has the potential to implement the national character education. The development of the implementation of art education leading more greatly to multicultural-based character value that requires conceptual contribution of all parties is needed. In general this paper discusses the implementation of art learning in order to manifest multicultural-based character education as a response to the road map for arts-education, Unesco.

Pasang contains the rules that regulate the relationship between humans and God, among human beings, and humans with nature. They are very obedient to preserve the environment, especially their forests. Forest management practice based on "Pasang" is an interesting phenomenon, because certain part of the Pasang actually implements conservation practices and sustains forest management.

PENGIKISAN BAHASA DALAM MASYARAKAT JAWA Catatan tentang Proses Kepunahan Bahasa Jawa
Suparta, Hendarto
Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Diponegoro Semarang

Will Javanese language die in ten to fifteen years to go? The answer tends to be “no”. How about in coming two or three generations? The answer will be “possibly yes”. The fact, since the day of the independence declaration of the Republik of Indonesia, Javanese language has been undergoing a process what may be called language obsolescent or language replacement, or language demise or language death, in a certain degree. There are at least two reasons to support the prediction on that undesired destiny of the Javanese language in next generation periods. First, in this global era caused by the speed development of science and technology especially in transportation and communication, half of the total languages in the world, around 6000 languages, were dead in the past three centuries and ten languages will die every year. Some local languages have been replaced by, not many but powerful and dominant international languages, like English, and by national language like Indonesian in Indonesia. In Semarang and possibly other cities in Java not including Surakarta and Yogyakarta, Javanese people rarely speak krama, in a situation where it should be, while at least in rural area where ngoko was used, now in certain domains are replaced by Indonesian language significantly, where the speakers are young generation. Javanese language, said many people, has been a foreign language taught in elementary school to senior high school. Today, however, in informal situation among those who are familiar one with another, especially between people from lower status, lower Javanese or ngoko is still used in many places, and full Javanese (ngoko and krama) is still used in areas such as Demak, Purwodadi, Salatiga, and Pekalongan. This phenomena will unlikely change in 5 to 10 years to go. But no one, I think, will dare to guarantee if people use one to two generations as criterion. Now people with different backgrounds have been without hesitant to choose Indonesian as their children’s mother tongue since 30 to 35 years ago, with many different reasons. Two among other reasons are, first, for their children’s success in school, and second, parents don’t want their children speak with them using ngoko, so it seems no choice but Indonesian. How about with krama? It is not a secret any more that some parents in Semarang city tend not having communicative competence to speak krama. Entering global era in this reformation period, English language has been used everywhere in this country although actually people still use Indonesian, so what I mean is that that is a case of code-mixing. What is important to note here is that people’s attitude toward that foreign language can be considered to endanger the status of Indonesian because of the high status of that foreign language in the situation only few people speak standard Indonesian, an Indonesian prestigious variety. It is clear without saying with the fate of Javanese language if no people are aware with the situation. This article proposes some suggestions to anticipate the situation described above beside the fact that Javanese people are still proud with their culture.

STRIP KOMIK SEBAGAI WADAH PERISTIWA BUDAYA

Jurusan Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya
Universitas Diponegoro,
Array
Comic Strip is “a short series of amusing drawings with a small amount of writing which is usually published in a newspaper” (Cambridge 2003: 239). It usually contains stories of what happened at the moment of the comic strips published in the newspaper. That is why, although it cannot be considered as a historical document, it can be considered as a medium of factual events happening at the moment of the newspaper published, delivered in an entertaining packaging. One of those factual events is cultural event related to the culture of the people where the newspaper published. Those events can be considered as cultural one by revealing the readers’ interpretation of the comic strips by using semiotic and pragmatic theories to see whether the events is considered as part of their culture or not. As comic strip consists of pictures and utterances, the analysis can be done by using Semiotics theory to analyse its picture (visual element) and Pragmatics theory to analyse its utterance (verbal element). Firstly, the informant reveals the conversational implicature of the utterances. The result is then analysed by using the Relevance Theory from Sperber and Wilson (1986: 1996) to describe the utterances’ meaning, how they get it, and why they get it that way. Secondly, the informant interprets the comic strip (the picture along with the utterance’s analysis). The result is then analysed by using the Signifying Order Theory by Danesi and Perron (1999) to describe the comic strip’s meaning, how they get it, and why they get it that way.

Their existence serves as a form and effect of conservation and the expression of the strength of the Madurese community in preserving the culture of their ancestors. The existence of langghar, kophung and bhaqaf can be a very important part of the culture for the Madurese community, especially in terms of ethical values, religious values, and philosophical values that are found in them. These values continue to be searched more intensely, in an effort to uncover the sacredness and uniqueness that are still neatly stored. One of the values which continues to be respected in langghar, kophung and bhaqaf is the value of religiosity which has never been dispirited up to the present.

KESENIAN & MATA PENCAHARIAN - Upaya Seniman Tradisional & Populer dalam Pemenuhan Nafkah

The traditional and popular artists have their fans, who are associated with levels of society and socio-economic conditions of the artists. Most artists appreciate the arts as a forum for the fulfillment of subsistence and some other artists treat art not merely as the main work in making a living, but as self-actualization and calling in life. Democratization, way of life & lifestyle have encouraged and accelerated development of new traditions in the arts; industrialization that took place since the early 1970s emphasized the political, policy and strategy choices of economy, trade and commercial business and service-based industries, which are very influential on the lives of the type, variety and artistic tastes. Deployment mode of art with industry and trade system applies to the popular performing arts, both departing from the tradition of Java and the growing management and modern technology, which supported the creation and innovation. With such developments, the traditional artists tend to be marginalized and subsistence efforts to meet with arts performances tend to be unprofitable, while popular artists through the art of business and trade industries tend to prosper. This research, among others, find authentic evidence from the field to confirm the truth of these allegations carefully, so that building theory and the concept of "the efforts of traditional and popular artists in the fulfillment of living life" is a field-based, not based on theory and concepts of the social and cultural sciences - called grand theory. In addition to utilizing the resources of media such as newspapers, magazines and internet websites, techniques of field observation and interviews, as well as in-depth interviews, which are commonly used in qualitative research, the mainstay of this research data collection.

This research entitled “The Javanese Female Ghost in “Panjebar Semangat” as a Representation of Femme Fatale”aims to show the feminist value in Javanese horror stories with female ghost as a villain and men as most of their victims. This research uses feminism as a main approach and femme fatale theory as the specific approach theory. This research shows that there are three kinds of of female ghost, they are female ghosts who experienced a miserable life before her death, sensual women and women whose background is not known. For the three kinds of women it can be revealed the causes of the female spirits to become evil spirits, the modes of female ghosts to ensnare and trap victims, the female ghost‟s harmful effects to men, and the solutions as the anti-climac in the story

Conventionally the construction of religious knowledge is carried out by the authority / person who has a scientific background and / or skills in the field of religion or the person who gets the legitimacy as a religious teacher, among others called ustadz, kiyai / or tengku. Religious knowledge is top-down because the production of knowledge and the truth of religion is determined by the religious elite so that the public becomes the object of religious. The new media era has changed the tendency of religious education by opening public participation in the production of religious knowledge. Religion becomes the object of daily conversation with diverse and contestative meanings, no longer absolute and elitist. The shift of the center of religious knowledge to the public has brought fundamental implications on the development of religion itself, with the occurrence of aqidah siltation, religious divergence / and co-optation of religion. The center of power shifts from the religious elite to the media that is present within the framework of political economic interests.

FUNDAMENTALISME AGAMA : Telaah Artikel “Religious Fundamentalism” dalam Buku Introducing Anthropology of Religion; Culture of the Ultimate Karya Jack David Eller
Kholis, Nur
Universitas Islam Nahdlatul Ulama (UNISNU) Jepara
Array
The discussion in the article "Religious Fundamentalism" has a background in the development of the global cultural situation in the 20th and 21st centuries which shows an atmosphere of "tension" due to the encounter of religion with modern culture and secularity. Religion seemed to feel threatened by modernity so that it carried out self-defense and simultaneously resisted. As a result of being confined to tension that is actually "self-created", according to Eller, religious fundamentalism appears with a ferocious, vindictive and sometimes violent character. This kind of character is increasingly entrenched for those who have similar emotions, attitudes, and puritanical religious orientations. The main message Eller conveyed is that religious fundamentalism is not a single and stand-alone phenomenon, but is interrelated with other cultural factors with high complexity.

Takari coastal water has the potential to use natural resources which are rich in lead content. This potential is utilized by the community as one of the occupational professions known as tin mining or tin mining activities. The term ngereman appears as a custom of tradition that has been going on for generations, namely asking for a 'quota' in the form of tin which is carried out during tin mining activities in an area. The results showed that the average 'ngereman' actor in Takari coastal waters was dominated by women, with 'widow' status based on economic aspects in meeting economic needs, whose generally limited expertise, education and economic access. This phenomenon of gluing in interaction with the miners is based on two things, the first by bringing the miner's food needs and the second without bringing the miner's needs to only expect compassion or voluntary deed from the miners. The granting of ‘quota’ for mining products is based on two considerations, namely if there are tin products obtained for sale and not harming the miners themselves, without any element of violence.

Novel with Javanese cultural setting is a phenomenon in Indonesian literary work. Umar Kayam in Para Priyayi provides vivid picture of the life of a specific Javanese aristocrat called priyayi from last period of Colonial to Independence Era. This article seeks to reveal identity and social mobility of priyayi, using sociology of literature approach. The article shows that Sastrodarsono, main character in the novel, is able to mobilize upward socially and attach to priyayi class as well as to its value, commitment and in-group feeling. Sosrodarsono who came from lower class in Javanese society was able to reach aristocrat status (priyayi) and built his own aristocrat dynasty. He internalizes priyayis’ values and resocializes it to his family. The novel gives brief spectacle on social mobilization of Javanese aristocrat family and elements shaping the identity of priyayi. Kayam succesfully revives the priyayi life in his work so that his fiction contains cultural explanation just like anthropological works do.

This study aims to identify variants of Islamic religiosity in Chinese Muslim life as reflected in the organization of the Indonesian Chinese Islamic Association (Persatuan Islam Tionghoa Indonesia/PITI). This organization has distinctive features about how dialogue between Islam, Chinese ethnicity, implementation of Indonesian Islamic law legislation, and Javanese culture occured. This study uses a symbolic-interpretative anthropology approach. The conclusion of this study includes as the following (1) the organizational system of PITI in Jepara district is driven by indigenous Muslims who are active as administrators of the Nahdlatul Ulama in Jepara district and only two people of Chinese descents are administrators, while others are members; on the other hand, the involvement of "influential people" in the political world in Jepara also supports its existence. As for the organization funding is obtained and managed independently in the management level in Jepara; (2) Islamic characteristics of the PITI Muslim community in Jepara regency include muallaf status, feeling of being a minority but having sufficient economic, secular-materialist tendencies, prominent Chinese culture, and still strong pressure from family circles for Islam; and (3) the dimensions of Chinese socio-culture and the lives of indigenous people are more visible in socio-cultural life than the influence of religious norms.

Indonesians are undergoing a socioeconomic transformation from a agricultural society to an industrial society. In the transformation, Indonesian postindustrial society shifts to postmodern society. The postindustrial society is theoretically designated as information society, knowledge economy, post-industrial economy, and network society. In the meantime, the postmodern society is designated with uncertainty, insecurity, and doubt. The lifestyle of the agricultural society is accordingly merged with that of the postmodern society. TRADISI FENG SHUI PADA KELENTENG DI PECINAN SEMARANG

Chinese temples of kelenteng in Pecinan Semarang area resemble Chinese temples in Fujian and Guangdong provinces in Southern China. As the building to worship of Budha, Tao, and Confucius, kelenteng is built by applying “feng shui” principles as tradition in arranging space pattern. The application of “feng shui” in Chinese kelenteng constitutes the choice of location, site plan, the placement of God and Goddess statues and the usage of color in the ornamentation. Since its establishment until now the application of “feng shui” in Chinese kelenteng seems unchanged. As the asset of Semarang City, kelenteng is expected to remain eternal because kelenteng can show a characteristic identity or an image of Pecinan or China town complex; as well this complex can be tourism destination in Central Java.

THE SYMBOL OF LIFE BASED ON WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS’S POEM, "SPRING AND ALL" THROUGH STILISTIC VIEW
Jumino, Jumino
English Department, Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University
Array
"Spring and All" poem talks about life around us as a simple daily experience, describing the turn of the winter to the coming of the next season, spring. Human life is always changing. Not always happy, symbolized by winter but also not forever suffering, symbolized by spring. Natural suffering is usually a test to achieve happiness. Williams changes his choice of words between two parts of the poem to give the reader a different feeling in the poem that provides a contrast to the ideas of life and death. Through "Spring and All", Williams wants to show the reader how the ideas of life and death can be seen through the transition from winter to spring. He uses dreary imagery (winter) to show sorrow and death, then uses imagery (spring) to live life and hope. Thus, if people think positively, there will be opportunities to improve in the future.

Human creature and culture together build a socio-cultural life, patterned and systematically referred to a socio-cultural system. Systematization through adjustments with the socio-cultural thoughts and practices in norms, ideas, values, aesthetics, tradition, all of which can be realized through cultural elements, at one time was the cultural content. Socio-cultural systems can be understood as the bowl of developing cultural elements as the embodiment of cultural contents which are intertwined. Five Indonesian socio-cultural systems, which are formed by cultural background and experiences from period to period, can be considered as the fruits of civilization and nation experiences perpetually moving and growing.

Three important cases need to be raised to begin this article. First, it is the issue of advancing education and strengthening culture. The issue should be seen as awareness to understand arts in various archipelago as a whole system, namely regarding human’s behaviour and values and natural-physical and socio-cultural environmental resources; that is, an eco-cultural system. This basic understanding becomes the starting point for carrying out activities or praxis in dealing with the changes which occur. Second, the effort of inheritance in its form as the preservation and development of this culture which refers to the awareness of artistic diversity which needs to be maintained as a system that gives freedom in unity and integrity. Third, art is a cultural element that is sensitive to differences, and becomes a flexible means of bridging differences; it becomes a means of appreciation of the refined inner space to overcome violence, hatred, pride, and greed. In brief, what is discussed in this paper comprises (1) art in Indonesia in the context of the archipelago culture; (2) socio-cultural changes and their implications in the development of art in Indonesia; and (3) inheritance efforts as an educational process which needs to be done. The problem is thoroughly tried to be discussed through an eco-cultural perspective, namely by putting the parts of the problem as a whole system which is interconnected among humans, values, and their environment in the micro and macro environment.

Array
Serat Darmasonya written by KPH Suryaningrat was a manuscript using Javanese language and letter, and also in the form of tembang macapat. In its development, Serat Darmasonya was transliterated into the Latin letter and translated into Indonesian language by Suratmin in 1981 and published by Proyek Penerbitan Buku Sastra Indonesia dan Daerah. Transliteration and translation of the manuscript aimed to help the readers especially and the manuscript researchers generally to comprehend its content. Serat Darmasonya contains akidah (beliefs) based on rukun iman in Islam (the five Islam pillars). Islam belief is to believe in the singleness of Allah, the Only One God and the difference between Allah as the Creator and His creatures; the positions, jobs, and form of His angels; the existence of His holy books that are Taurat, Zabur, Injil, and Al-Quran; the prophets as His messengers; the Day of Resurrection; and both good and bad things which happen as His will. The purpose of this study is to reveal the symbols of Islam beliefs contained in Serat Darmasonya. Finding the answer of the research problems, semiotics approach based on Riffaterre’s semiotics theory was used. Basically, this study is a library research. The research data were obtained from the textual sources related to the research object. The result study showed that Serat Darmasonya written by KPH Suryaningrat used the elements of indirection, both as displacing, distorting, and creating meaning. According to heuristics and hermeneutics reading and interpretation, matrics identification, model, variance, and hypogram, it can be concluded that Islam beliefs in Serat Darmasonya manuscript is believing in Allah, His angels, His holy books, His messengers, the Judgement day, and His will (predestination)

A problem in this connection includes the management of marine resources applied in Indonesia and the centralized nature of the alleged to be one factor affecting the depletion of coastal resources. Supervision and enforcement seem to be weak because of the vast territory, therefore we need an approach to effective management and efficient as well as small scale fisheries management by using the values of local wisdom in the District of Demta in Jayapura in Papua province.

TENTANG KONSEP KEBUDAYAAN

Human consciousness towards the experience encouraged him composing formulation, definitions, and theories about the ways of his life, into the conception about culture. Consciousness thus commenced from the gift of reason, his human instincts and feelings, which are not owned by other beings, such as animals. Leslie White (1973), defined the conception of culture that includes "beliefs, ideologies, social organization, and technology (the use of tools)." In the second half of the 19th century Sir Edward Burnett Tylor, conducted a study of "primitive societies," which functions as the foundation for putting together the concept of culture: "Culture or Civilization ... is that complex which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom, and many other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society.” Three quarters of a century later, Ralph Linton (1945), offers a formula about the culture that emphasized on the factor of integration achieved through a learning behavior: "A culture is the configuration of learned behavior and results of behavior whose component elements are shared and transmitted by the members of a particular society." While according to Koentjaraningrat (1974), elements of culture include (1) social organization systems; (2) systems of religion and religious ceremonies; (3) livelihood systems; (4) science and knowledge systems; (5) technology and equipment systems; (6) language systems; and (7) arts. Meanwhile, Anthony Giddens (1991), conceptualized culture by referring to the whole way of life of the members of a society. With the concepts of culture, background and multi-cultural experiences, in the communities of nation of Indonesia there can be arranged Indonesian socio-cultural systems.

This article discusses marriage ceremony among the Samin people consisting of several steps: nyumuk, ngendek, nyuwito-ngawulo and paseksen. The marriage ceremony was held in the modest style but rich in meaning. The center of the marriage ceremony is the groom’s vow before the bride’s parents to be a husband. The vow is in simple Javanese language. According to Samin people, marriage ceremony is personal matter that needs no government involvement. Thus they do not register their marriage.

Indonesia has large potential fishery resources, both marine fisheries and inland public waters. The potential of existing fishing is expected to have an impact on the people’s beneficiaries. However its resources are open access and common property without the accompaniment surveillance which tends to encourage people at maximum utilization patterns and unsustainable. One approach to resource management effort, which is quite effective is the power of local construction. This paper aims to find out the various models of local construction in the management of fishery resources, especially in public waters. The writing method uses the desk or literature study. The study shows that the implementation of community-based management model is proven to deliver results quite effective and efficient. Management efficiency, which reduces conflict of fishermen and the sustainability of the resource is obtained from the management model based on local wisdom, which puts public participation as a key indicator in the implementation of resource management.

BUDAYA BAHARI DAM TRADISI NELAYAN DI INDONESIA

There are at least five phenomena which mark the complexity of maritime culture and fisherman tradition in Indonesia; social group of the maritime society, the development of economic sectors concerning sea products, social hierarchy in the daily maritime activities, the relationship between the elements of maritime culture and life sectors of the society, and the continuation and alteration of maritime culture's elements. In order to acquire a deep study on the complexity of maritime culture, there are several concepts used in this paper: Koentjaraningrat's concept of "three forms of culture", Sanjek's concept of "the dynamic culture and creation", and Vadya's concept of "contextual progressive explanatory method". The forms of maritime culture include the system of culture, belief, institution, and production technology. Meanwhile, the dynamics of maritime culture and fisherman tradition is determined not only by the internal factors but also the external forces, such as, innovation on technology, government policy, university interventions, nongovernmental organizations, donor institution, and regional, national, and even global market. Apparently, those external forces have brought negative impacts on the life of maritime society, marked by the decrease of economic prosperity, natural resources and sea environment. The negative impacts can be avoided by applying community-based management in the development of maritime culture

This research discusses the assimilation process of Chinese moslem community in Kudus in the year 1961-1998 by using historical method. There are four factors which formed Chinese moslem community in Kudus, namely environment, education, marriage, and willingness. There are two unique typologies owned by Chinese moslem community, first, 'abangan'Chinese moslem and second, 'putihan' Chinese moslem. Behavioral configurations of social religiousness of abangan Chinese moslem still entangle ancestor's traditional procedures, such as doing worshiping to ancestor, celebrating Imiek, and installing to 'rajah' (tatto) Chinese. On the contrary, putihan Chinese moslem configurations have eliminated all ancestor's traditional procedures and they are active in running Islam teaching, like conducting shalat five times a day, holy fasting in ramadlan, zakat, and haji. The logical consequence from the assimilation process between Chinese moslem and native moslem is the decreasing orientation to ancestor's culture. The reduction orientation of the ancestor's culture can be seen from assimilation channels, such as name changing, marriage, communication and language, education, and earn living

Anak Langit is an Indonesian sinema elektronik (sinetron) or electronic cinema, a kind of tv series, for teenagers since most of the main characters are teenagers. Young viewers love this tv series as it tells us about the life of a motor gang in a big city which becoming a trend recently in several big cities in Indonesia. Although the main characters show the viewers how to be a good motor gang with positive attitude, we consider the language of this TV series is impolite as the rival of this motor gang often shows verbal abuse in most of their scenes using Bahasa Indonesia dialect Betawi (the language of Betawi people, the people of Betawi Kampong in Jakarta). Those impolite utterances may be used to show the real life, including the colloquial language, of Jakarta/Betawi people which sometimes considered impolite by common people. It may be also done to strengthen the characteristics of the antagonist ones who are impolite and rude. In Pragmatics Study, impoliteness violates the Maxims of Politeness Principles. This violation can be seen as electronic media violence that may influence viewers to imitate the verbal abuse such as using the impolite utterance or doing the violence. In the end, it may leads into violence and less pro-social behaviour

Translation is process of transferring text from source language (SL) into target language (TL). The process can be challenging when there are no translation found on the TL as a result of different politics, economy, social, cultural, historical and religious backgrounds. A text containing folklore is one of the difficult texts to be translated as it contains legend, tradition, art or folktale. When untranslability happens, Venuti (2000: 427) suggests translator to use the original text by adding footnote or glossary. To avoid a shift in translation, Vinay and Dalbernet (1958) suggests two translation methods namely direct translation along with three translation techniques, these are Calque, and literal translation and oblique methods along with four translation techniques named transposition, modulation, equivalence or reformulation, and adaptation. This research applies those model, methods and techniques of translation along with folklore research method from Dundes (2007) to promote tourism at Pekalongan Regency area.

Delivery or delivery money is money given by the male to the prospective in-laws for marital needs with its positive and negative impacts. The negative impact of delivery money is seen when it is set at a high amount by the prospective in-laws to be paid, making it difficult to be met. Not a few also couples who want to establish a household are forced to postpone marriage because of the high amount of money that has been determined from the woman side. The research question in this paper is how the implementation of the practice of conducting delivery money in marriage customs in Lampung, is it true that the determination of very high sums of money influences the delay in marriage in the community and how the Islamic law views the delivery money which causes delays in marriage. By using field research methods, the data have been grouped into two forms, namely quantitative data and qualitative data. Quantitative data is the data of the results of the questionnaire while the qualitative data is the data of the results of interviews and observations. Then from the quantitative data tables are then analyzed and concluded while the qualitative data is connected between one fact and the other facts, then analyzed using a descriptive analysis approach. The results of the study found that the indigenous people of Lampung all practiced giving money and stipulated it by looking at the education of women, their work and the number of stipulated habits in the village, and eight pending marriages from several cases due to high cash, to the impacts arising from the stipulation of high and contradictory money with valid ‘urf terms; it can be concluded that the law of high passing money is not appropriate as it should apply. And many have charged men whose economies are middle to lower and who have dependents to carry out marriages resulting in delays in marriage.

As a maritime country with vast territorial waters and abundant marine resources, Indonesia, a country with diverse ethnics and peculiarities, has a chance to become a great nation. Its natural and human resources are the basis capital to build the nation abreast with other nations in the world. Indonesia was once also known as a victorious maritime country with strong influence to the neighboring countries. Hence, it is an ironic that the maritime ethnic as the “guardian of the sea” has to live in backwardness, deterioration, social and economic adversity, and even social and cultural decline. Support and aid both from the government and the people with commitment toward the advancement of this maritime ethnic are greatly needed. Forcing the maritime ethnic like Suku Bajo or “the Sea People” to stay away from the sea is a futile act. In fact, it will only lead to prolonged conflict. Conversely, involving them in such a program of preserving the sea and its biota is not something that is impossible, even though it is also not easy. Along with recent changes and demands, the “Sea People” or Suku Bajo eventually has to live more open and have the ability to interact with modern life.

Lasem was called “La Petit Chinois” or “Small China” because there were Chinese community settlements consisting of old Chinese-style houses. Lasem was a large port city since the time of the Majapahit Kingdom until the Dutch colonialism encouraged cultural acculturation. Lasem batik is one of the results of acculturation of Javanese and Chinese culture and has been a noble outfit since King Lasem I ruled (1350-1375). Cultural acculturation forms a distinctive cultural identity that is an important part of coastal culture. Therefore the uniqueness of cultural acculturation in Lasem is interesting to study. The purpose of this study was to obtain an overview of Chinese residential architecture in Lasem Chinatown and Chinese culture in Lasem, so as to enrich local theories about the meaning behind the architecture of Chinese houses in Lasem. This research method uses the rationalistic paradigm with a qualitative approach. Cultural acculturation influences local architecture through variety, pattern of space, and order, so that the result of mixing culture will form a new image of local society (Fauzy, 2012). The culture acculturation has influenced the spatial layout and details of the residential houses of the Chinese community so as to produce a unique form of architecture.

Coastal society is a group of indigenous people or local people who reside or live in coastal regions and have particular custom in managing its surroundings/row generation to generation. The people manage their coastal resource traditionally and locally; their social structure and activities are still simple. The people have their local wisdom, namely Hak Ulayat Laut, which can conceptually be translated into sea tenure. Hak Ulayat Laut is a form of communal marine resource management. The traditional local wisdom can be manifested in social values, custom norms, ethics, system of belief, traditional site planning, as well as tools and environment-friendly simple technology. The fishing community of Bebalang Village, Sangihe Islands Regency, is a group of indigenous people who have their local wisdom in maintaining and using marine resource. The local wisdom is manifested in a traditional institution which manages the usage of the available natural resources. In the institution there are a number of rules concerning the usage of marine resource as well as the applicable technology and territorial-operating borders. Besides that, the people of Bebalang Village uphold the law regulating the catching of malalugis, a species of kite fish. They catch malalugis by using seke, bamboo-woven traps. The traps appear like bubu, but they have bigger sizes.

This paper aims to analyze women from a cultural perspective based on R.A. Kartini’s thoughts and struggles. The focus of the study is on R.A. Kartini’s thoughts and struggles concerning the custom of “pingitan” (seclusion), non-schooling culture, and polygamy culture closely related to the life of Javanese noble women. This paper also analyzes the perspective underlying the thinking and struggle of R.A. Kartini. The last discussion critically analyzes R.A. Kartini’s thoughts and struggles to devise a study of feminism that touches the root of Indonesian culture which would be very appropriate to study women's problems in local culture. The result of the study shows that the thinking and struggle of R.A. Kartini are sharpened and hegemonized by Western thinking about emancipation and equality when criticizing the existence of Javanese noble women in the custom of seclusion, non-schooling culture, and polygamy culture.

Before Tumbang Anoi treaty, Dayak tribe was active in performing the rituals as there were wars among their clans or against colonialist. After Tumbang Anoi treaty, Dayak is rarely involved in war except they feel that their pride or tradition is humiliated. Nowadays, the rituals which consist of ceremonies, dances, and headhunting or Kayau are only performed as guests reception except the headhunting part

The method used in this study is the study of relevant literature from research that has been done before. From the results of the literature review, it was concluded that culture and religion became capital for the people who were maintained even though their settlements were now scattered. Culture and religion also become identities which are very influential factors for the resilience of settlements which up to now still have vulnerability, so that anticipation and adaptation need to be carried out as preparedness for possible future disasters.

Islamic marriage rules in practice form values that are lived out and practiced in the context of cultural society so that they emerge as symbols as a form of the dialectical process between religious values and cultural values. As an example of the concept of dowry in Islam which has two dimensions, the universality of the values adhered to by all its adherents and also the value locality that is formed from the dialectical process that occurs between religious teachings and the local culture of the adherents. This was seen in the santri community in Karangbesuki Village, Malang City in determining the dowry in their marriage by identifying aspects of the normative dowry in the fiqh that they embraced into their marital culture.

Cultural heritage is an important value owned by some communities in the area of Teluk Cenderawasi National Park. One of which is the legacy of important places owned by Isenebuai village community. Isenebuai village community has Sawora or "oath" to organize and manage the resources, location owned. The implementation of Sawora by Isenebuai village community has been done for a long time. The implementation of Sawora has also been applied to the villagers and the community outside of Isenebuai village, with the rules made by the adat elders and community leaders of Isenebuai village. Sawora and important places of Isenebuai village are a very unique cultural treasure owned by the village community specifically and owned by the Cendrawasih Bay National Park Area in general. In general, Sawora has similarities with Sasi but has a very different implementation base, because Sawora is the original product of Isenebuai village community culture that has existed since long time (before the introduction of Sasi).

Walisongo figures are well-known as preachers of Islam in Java. They lived in 15th until 16th Century. Their story is popular through oral tradition as well as Javanese literature, one of which is Babad Tanah Jawi. The record of Walisongo in Babad Tanah Jawi cannot be separated from the function of Babad literature as legitimate source for Mataram Power. This article seeks to reveal the description of several Walisongo figures in Babad Tanah Jawi. The article employs literature study as starting point and focuses on intrinsic reading of Babad Tanah Jawi text. Walisongo figures are commonly depicted as protagonists in Babad Tanah Jawi, but Sunan Kudus is portrated quite antagonistic due to his support to Arya Penangsang whose position is as enemy of Sultan Pajang, in which Mataram’s kings claimed to be the heirs of Pajang. Walisongo figures, especially Sunan Kalijaga, provide moral and spiritual legitimation to Mataram Dynasty. Walisongo figures repreresent Islamic support to Mataram Dysnasty as Islamic Kings who gain legitimation from supranatural power, instead of people democratic voices.

Karimunjawa islands possess several unique ethnicities. As the biggest island of the 27 islands, Karimunjawa has a variety of ethnic groups such as Java, Bugis, Madura, Buton, Bajao, and Flores. As the biggest ethnic comes from outer Karimunjawa, they live in group in Kemojan village, Batulawang. They still carry out their culture and tradition from their mother land. It is not suprising that a lot of Bugis-design houses can be found in Batulawang. Bugis society also occupies Parang island, but they already lost their ethnic characteristics, even they live like Javanese people in term of their houses and language. Life philosophy of Bugis people may build harmony among other ethnic groups in Karimunjawa. Pluralism can be seen in everyday life among people who live Karimunjawa. Proporsionally, a variety of ethnics who live in Karimunjawa gives honour and confession toward activities, social values, social structure and organization. Karimunjawa people already welcome the pluralism in their social lives.

Language is an arbitrary system of sound used by members of a social group to cooperate, communicate, and identify one self. The paper discusses the use of language to identify personal identity, social class, ethnicity, and nationality. Language can determine the identity of an individual and a group. Language is also used to identify or to show the personal identity of a person. Furthermore, language shows the social class of a person. A person who comes from the low level class has a different language style from those of the higher level class. As ethnic identity, language can be used to denote ethnicity or the membership of a person or group in a certain ethnic group. Language can also become the national identity as well. Thus, every country has its own national language

The people of Suruhan, Jubelan, Sumowono, Semarang has two important traditions, Sambatan and Nyadran which have been done since Kyai Bumi and Nyai Bumi (folktale figures) era. The word Sambatan derives from two words Sambet and Batan meaning helping someone who is doing a particular activity (traditional ceremony) including building a house. Meanwhile, Nyadran is a way of thanking God, Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala, for the blessing given to all people of Suruhan and a way of praying fot the dead. There are two types of Nyadran, one which is held in the house of the dead at night of his/her death, and the other one in the cemetery on the next morning after his/her death. In Suruhan, Nyadran is always done on Friday before fasting month (Ramadhan). In this study, Semiotics theory is used to reveal the meaning of these two traditions by interviewing people of Suruhan who understand well about these traditions.
