Abstract


Landrente (land rent) was one of the Dutch Colonial goverment policies implemented during the Cultivation System (Cultuur Stelseel). The basis  philosophy of the system is the opinion that basicly land is owned by the state. peasants have to rent from the government. In the systems of the farmers have to pay the land rent annualy to the government. Because the scarcity of money, the farmers could also pay the land rent with rice. the quantity of the rental payment depended on the level of soil fertility. For this reason, rice filed were classified into as two categories namely irrigated rice field and unirrigated rice field. Land rent was put in effect in every village and head village took responsible for this mechanism. The paper discusses land rent in Rembang Residency during the cultivation systems period. Historical mthod and socio-economic approach are used to answer how rent land immplemented in Rembang residency. It also used to answer the questions on whether the land rent impacted to the deterioration of economic life of the people in Rembang
