Bunuh Diri dalam “Kereta Api Lewat di Jauhan” Karya Iwan Simatupang di Antara Rasionalitas dan Irasionalitas: Analisis Persyaratan Dua-Keadaan Derek Parfit

Abstract

The existence of suicides phenomenon—five act of suicide in the short story—written at the beginning and end of the story places this issue as the center of the story. The last act of suicide in the short story by Si Tua is the result of his interaction with the phenomenon of suicide around him. Thus, this study aims to analyze the effect of intense suicides phenomenon exposure on the Si Tua's suicide choices. In addition, this study tries to explain the rationality or irrationality of the subject's decision to commit suicide. Therefore, this study uses the concept of rationality and two-state requirements presented by Derek Parfit to assess the subject's decision to commit suicide as a basis for analysis. The results show that (1) suicide phenomenon exposure around the subject—which then builds a space—affects his decision to commit suicide. Then, Si Tua whose in that vulnerable space was finally affected by the phenomenon around him: killing himself like other subjects. (2) The decision to commit suicide seems rational because it has a reason that the subject believes in taking action. However, the two-state requirement includes consideration of the value and worth of life: Si Tua meaningful life makes his decision to commit suicide, then, irrational. (3)The phenomenon of suicide is written as a form of author's criticism of the subject's individuality.
