Jurnal Hukum Progresif (JHP), also known as the Progressive Law Journal, is a peer-reviewed international journal in legal studies published by the Doctoral Program in Law, Faculty of Law, Universitas Diponegoro, Semarang, Indonesia. Established in 2005, the journal is dedicated to advancing progressive, critical, and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding law as a dynamic social institution shaped by and responsive to justice, power, inequality, and societal transformation.
The journal draws inspiration from the intellectual legacy of Professor Satjipto Rahardjo, one of Indonesia’s most influential legal scholars, widely regarded as a Begawan Hukum (pre-eminent legal scholar) for his profound contribution to Indonesian legal thought. As the founder of progressive legal thought, he emphasised that law should not be understood merely as a formal system of rules, but as a human-centred institution that must remain responsive to social realities and oriented toward substantive justice, human dignity, and social welfare.
Published biannually in April and October, Jurnal Hukum Progresif provides immediate open access to all published articles and applies a rigorous double-blind peer-review process to ensure academic quality, originality, and integrity.
Jurnal Hukum Progresif serves as a scholarly forum for research that critically examines the relationship between law, society, justice, and social change. The journal particularly welcomes contributions that move beyond formalistic or purely doctrinal approaches by exploring how law is produced, interpreted, implemented, contested, and experienced within broader social, political, cultural, economic, technological, and environmental contexts.
The journal’s primary focus includes progressive jurisprudence, socio-legal studies, critical legal studies, feminist legal theory, gender and law, masculinity studies, intersectionality and law, legal philosophy, human rights, social justice, legal pluralism, and interdisciplinary approaches to legal transformation. Jurnal Hukum Progresif is particularly interested in scholarship addressing issues of inequality, marginalisation, identity, power relations, institutional change, and the development of more inclusive and responsive legal systems.
The journal gives particular attention to legal issues in Indonesia and the Global South, while encouraging comparative, transnational, and international perspectives that contribute to broader global debates. It welcomes studies concerning contemporary challenges such as human rights protection, gender equality, criminal justice reform, restorative justice, indigenous and customary justice, environmental and climate justice, technological transformation, artificial intelligence and digital society, governance reform, public accountability, and other emerging legal issues.
Research in specific fields of law—including constitutional law, administrative law, criminal law, private law, business law, international law, Islamic law, environmental law, and technology law—is welcomed when it provides a clear contribution to progressive legal scholarship through critical, socio-legal, comparative, theoretical, or rights-based analysis. Manuscripts that merely describe legislation, regulations, or judicial decisions without deeper analytical engagement with legal development and social implications fall outside the journal’s primary scope.
Jurnal Hukum Progresif publishes Original Research Articles, Conceptual Articles, Theoretical Articles, and Review Articles that demonstrate strong theoretical foundations, methodological rigor, and significant contributions to contemporary legal scholarship. The journal encourages interdisciplinary dialogue with related fields, including sociology, political science, anthropology, philosophy, gender studies, criminology, technology studies, environmental studies, and public policy, provided that legal analysis remains central.
Through the dissemination of high-quality legal scholarship, Jurnal Hukum Progresif seeks to contribute to the development of law that is just, inclusive, responsive, transformative, and connected to the realities of society. The journal welcomes submissions from scholars worldwide who share an interest in advancing progressive approaches to law and legal transformation.
Jurnal Hukum Progresif (JHP) has been indexed in Dimensions, Crossref, Garuda, and Google Scholar. JHP already has ISSN (Print): 1858-0254 & ISSN (Online): 2655-6081. The website of the journal can be accessed through https://ejournal.undip.ac.id/index.php/hukum_progresif.
