Abstract

This animated movie, titled Heisei Gassen Tanuki Pon Poko, tells the story of tanuki (raccoons) in the Tama area, a suburb of Tokyo. At first, they lived peacefully until the habitat where they lived was threatened by a massive housing development project. This research aims to investigate the changes the tanuki’s habitat due to neighbourhood modernization. The process of habitat change will be examined using Todorov's narrative model. This research uses qualitative methods, also uses narrative analysis. The results of the data analysis revealed a change of the tanuki habit due to modernization in their environment. After their habitat transformed into an urban area, the tanuki also changed in their lifestyle due to the impact of modernization on their habitat. Todorov's narrative, used in this paper, illustrates how the transition from the initial stage to the final stage necessitates the tanuki's adaptation to the new environment.
