Abstract
The visual landscape of Padang City is currently dominated by the use of bagonjong roofs across almost all public building typologies, ranging from government offices to commercial facilities. This research is motivated by the urgency to understand this phenomenon not merely as an aesthetic trend or cultural preservation, but as a complex socio-political interaction in the aftermath of the Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia (PRRI). This study aims to dissect the meaning behind this architectural homogenization and how architecture is utilized as a tool for identity negotiation, employing Pierre Bourdieu's sociological lens on symbolic power. This research employs a qualitative method with a literature study approach. The author synthesizes data from historical archives, architectural studies, and sociology to map the dynamics between the community's collective trauma and the built environment development policies in West Sumatra. The results indicate that the phenomenon of "bagonjongisasi" serves as an instrument of symbolic power exercised by regional elites to restore the symbolic capital of the Minangkabau people, which was shattered by the separatist stigma following the PRRI.
