PENGUATAN TENSES DAN READING SKILLS UNTUK MENINGKATKAN KEMAMPUAN READING SISWA KELAS X TEKNIK PEMESINAN SMK NEGERI JATENG SEMARANG

ABSTRAK

Kemampuan menguasai Tenses dan Reading Skills sangat diperlukan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca teks dalam Bahasa Inggris. Berdasarkan pemikiran tersebut dilakukanlah kegiatan pendampingan setara satu bulan oleh tim kecil pengabdian kepada masyarakat dari jurusan Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Diponegoro. Lokasi pengabdian kepada masyarakat adalah SMK Negeri Jawa Tengah di Semarang dan penerima materi pengabdian adalah siswa kelas X jurusan Teknik Pemesinan. Kegiatan setara satu bulan ini dibagi dalam dua termin, termin pertama tentang Tenses dan Reading Skills yang disampaikan dalam dua kali pertemuan dan termin kedua, juga dalam dua kali pertemuan, berisi tentang pelatihan dalam bentuk teks pendek popular yang sudah dimodifikasi untuk tujuan pelatihan Tenses dan Reading Skills. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan pendampingan ini adalah metode dwibahasa (Bilingual Method) dikarenakan kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa sangat heterogen. Materi disampaikan dalam bentuk power point agar siswa tidak merasa bosan atau jenuh. Hasil kegiatan pendampingan menunjukkan bahwa siswa tidak saja merasa mendapatkan manfaat dari materi dan pelatihan yang diberikan, namun mereka sangat antusias mengikuti kegiatan pendampingan ini dari awal hingga akhir selama satu bulan. Kegiatan pendampingan praktis efisien seperti ini perlu dilakukan dari waktu ke waktu untuk memberikan bekal tambahan bagi siswa.

ABSTRACT

The ability to master tenses and reading skills is needed to improve the ability to read texts in English. Based on this notion, the small team of community service from the Department of English Literature, Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University, carries out a one-month mentoring activity. The location of the community service is the Central Java State Vocational School in Semarang and the recipients of the mentoring materials are class X students majoring in Mechanical Engineering. This one-month equivalent activity is divided into two terms, the first term is about Tenses and Reading Skills which is delivered in two meetings and the second term, also in two meetings, contains training in the form of popular short texts that have been modified for Tenses and Reading Skills training purposes. The method used in this mentoring activity is the Bilingual Method because the students' English skills are very heterogeneous. The material is delivered in the form of power point so students do not feel bored. The results of the mentoring activities show that students not only feel they have benefited from the materials and trainings provided, but they are also very enthusiastic in participating in this mentoring activity from the start to finish for one month. Efficient practical assistance activities like this need to be carried out from time to time to provide additional skills for students.
