Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of ateji containing euphemism and dysphemism and the translation techniques used in the One Piece comic. A descriptive qualitative method was applied, with data collected through reading and note-taking. The results reveal 30 ateji data containing euphemism and dysphemism. Ten data contain euphemism, consisting of nine substitution-expression ateji and one English-based reading. The remaining twenty data contain dysphemism, including eleven spoken-language pronunciation ateji, two pronoun-based ateji, six substitution-expression ateji, and one special-term ateji specific to the work. The translation techniques used for euphemistic ateji include particularization, amplification, generalization, modulation, and literal translation. Meanwhile, dysphemistic ateji are translated using variation, modulation, reduction, literal translation, established equivalence, and adaptation. The findings indicate that euphemistic ateji tend to undergo semantic generalization and lexical substitution to avoid explicit coarse expressions. In contrast, dysphemistic ateji predominantly appear in spoken language to convey strong emotions such as anger. Dysphemism is also found in pronoun-based and substitution-expression ateji due to the use of harsh lexical choices, while special-term ateji emphasize negative character traits. The variation technique is most frequently used in translating dysphemistic ateji to adjust spoken language into a more standardized written form.
