Abstract

Nailed-slab System is a combination of pavement slabs and short piles connected by monoliths on the lower side of the plate. The piles are installed embedded in the soft soil. Previous studies tested models with configurations in which the outermost pile row is not placed exactly on the edge of the slab. This study aims to examine the slab’s deflection behavior in the system by placing the outermost pile row exactly at the edge of the slab. Testing of the 1:5 scale model was carried out in the laboratory using soft clay soil as a medium. Variations of the model include the use of one and two rows of reinforced concrete piles. Loading is given in the form of a centralized load, either monotonically or repetitively, with variations in loading locations at the edges, between, and the center of the slab. The test results were then compared with previous studies. The results showed that the placement of the outermost pile at the edge of the slab was able to reduce deflection, which was 61.19% at the end of the slab and 53.19% at the center. This decrease in deflection is caused by the functioning of the pile as an anchor element that keeps the slab from tipping over and maintains contact between the slab and the subgrade. With these conditions, the vertical wall barrier at the end of the plate is no longer needed. In addition, the increase in the number of pile rows contributes to a decrease in deflection and an increase in the rigidity of the system. However, deflection behavior showed a worse tendency to repetitive loading than monotonic, with an increase in deflection of 60–72% due to repetitive load.
