Penelitian ini merupakan studi kasus tentang permintaan maaf yang digunakan oleh orang Jawa yang menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Studi ini menggunakan teori speech acts dari Searle (1975) dan budaya bahasa Jawa dari Hofstede (1991) untuk menganalisis data. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan Discourse Completion Test (DCT) dengan 12 (duabelas) situasi yang berbeda. Partisipan penelitian adalah orang Jawa yang bisa berbahasa Inggris yang berdomisili di Surabaya dengan rentang usia antara 25 sampai 30 tahun.
