Thermal Components of Renewable Energy System

Increase in energy demand regarding the population growth, urbanization and industrial activity development, limitations of fossil fuels sources and their high emissions of greenhouse gases necessitate utilization of cleaner energy technologies. In this regard, renewable energy sources such as geothermal, wind, hydropower, biofuels and solar are introduced as the most applicable sources. These renewable energies are usable for several purposes including heating and cooling, desalination and power generation. Depending on the applied technology, different thermal components can be used in these systems. For instance, in thermal cycles, applicable for power generation, based on renewable energy sources like solar and geothermal, heat exchangers are widely used. Moreover, there are some thermal devices that are utilized for thermal management of some renewable energy systems such as heat pipes for solar PV modules. Aside from the thermal devices, there are some other thermal units that are used in renewable energy systems such as heat transfer fluids in solar collectors and thermal storage units in solar/thermal systems such as solar air heaters. In analysis of the mentioned renewable energy technologies, these thermal components must be considered.

Thermal components of energy technologies utilizing renewable energy sources can significantly influence the overall performance. Due to some complexities in the operating principles of these components, there can be some difficulties in modeling and optimization of these units. In this regard, it is crucial to apply novel and powerful approaches such as intelligent techniques for modeling and metaheuristic approaches for optimization. This special issue focuses on the application of the above-mentioned techniques in modeling and optimization of thermal components usable in renewable energy systems. Both original and review manuscripts are encouraged to be submitted to this issue for consideration of possible publication.  The main interested topics-but not limited to-are as follows:

  • Applications of intelligent methods such as artificial neural network in modeling thermal systems of renewable energy technologies.
  • Optimization of thermal components of renewable energy systems by using metaheuristic approaches.
  • Development of novel methods and models for performance analysis of the thermal components.
  •  Hybrid optimization algorithms for optimization of renewable energy systems with thermal components.
  • Integration of intelligent methods with optimization algorithms for accuracy enhancement of the models usable for thermal system modeling.
