Abstract

BKPH Bandar is a forest management unit under KPH Pekalongan Timur. The primary stand in BKPH Bandar was Pinus merkusii, thus the pine resin was its main commodity. Pine trees must be tapped to obtain pine resin. Tapping causes wounds and has the potential to cause a decline in the health of the tree. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the health condition of pine stands using the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) and provide recommendations for handling damage to the stands that occurred in the BKPH Bandar, KPH Pekalongan Timur. The health assessment involved parameters types of tree damage. In the present study, three cluster-plots were created, each located in RPH Kembang Langit, RPH Tombo, and RPH Sodong. The pine stands in each RPH were planted in 1997 (27 years old). The results showed the stands was dominated by Pinus merkusii, but there were other species such as Gnetum gnemon, Artocarpus heterophyllus, Maesopsis eminii, Pithecellobium jiringa, Alstonia scholaris, Falcataria falcata, and Hibiscus sp.  The most frequent damage occurred in the lower stem section (47,22%). The dominant type of damage observed was open wounds (40,95%), followed by broken or dead branches (22,84%) and termite infestations (18,27%). Based on plot level damage index, most stands were in the state of light to moderate damage. The recommendations provided through the results of this study are in the form of mitigation, such as managing more environmental friendly resin tapping and regular monitoring to reduce the impact of damage caused by biotic and abiotic factors on forest health.
