Abstract

ABSTRACT

Title: Efficacy of Lysol and Sodium Hypochlorite Against Pseudomonas aeruginosa Bacteria in Needles Waste at X Hospital

Background: Storage time of hazardous wastes at X Hospital tent to more than two days, and the process going without cooling at 00C because of it the wastes should be disinfected. Needle waste that storage was positively found Psedomonas aeruginosa bacteria. Lysol and sodium hypochlorite are disinfectants that commonly used at hospital. This study aims to analyze the decrease number of colonies Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria from needle waste before and after disinfection using lysol and sodium hypochlorite in various concentration and duration contact.

Method: The type of this study is quasi experiment. Needles waste is taken and rinsed with sterile normal saline. The bacterial suspension used to assess microbiological activities of lysol and sodium hypochlorite in reducing the population of Pseudomonas aeruginosa after disinfection. Bacterial population density was calculated using total plate count

Result: The average percentage of efficiency decreased number bacterial colonies in lysol concentration 1.5% with duration contact 1 minute, 5 minutes and 10 minutes respectively 32.7%; 38,0% and 64.1%. Killing rate lysol 2.5% has reached 100% since 1 minute duration contact. Sodium hypochlorite’s killing rate reached 98.3%. Statistically there was no difference in the average number of colonies Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria before disinfection, after disinfection for 1 minute, 5 minutes and 10 minutes with lysol 1.5% and sodium hypochlorite 0.0025%.

Conclusion: Lysol and sodium hypochlorite were effectively against P. aeruginosa bacteria in needles waste with effectiveness 73.5% and 98.3% respectively.
