Abstract

ABSTRACT
Tittle : Analysis of the Effect of Cigarette Smoke Exposure on the Incidence of Osteoporosis in Women Aged 50-59

Background: According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), osteoporosis ranks second, after heart disease, as a major global health issue. Based on data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI), the prevalence of osteoporosis in Indonesia reaches 23% in women aged 50-80 years and 53% in women aged over 80 years. North Sumatra is among one of the five provinces with a higher risk of osteoporosis. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke on the incidence of osteoporosis in female patients at the Rantauprapat Regional General Hospital.
Method: The required sample size is 116 respondents, using a simple random sampling technique. The sample criteria in this study are female patients aged 50-59 years residing in Rantau Utara and Rantau Selatan, patients with osteoporosis, and recorded in the medical records of RSUD Rantauprapat (for case respondents) and respondents who are family members of the research patient (for control respondents). Data analysis is performed using the Chi-Square test.
Results: The research results indicate a significant relationship between the number of cigarette sticks (p-value 0.000; OR 0.396), the duration of exposure to cigarette smoke (in minutes) (p-value 0.000; OR 0.077), and the location of exposure to cigarette smoke (p-value 0.001; OR 4.273) with osteoporosis.
Conclusion: In sequence, the determinants of osteoporosis incidence in women at Rantauprapat Regional General Hospital, based on exposure to cigarette smoke, are primarily the duration of exposure per minute, and location of exposure.
