Abstract

This article is an application note, a technical wrtiting for explaining a software tool that can be used to design various types of active filters using resistors and capacitors. The tool is named Analog Filter Wizard. It is a software created by Analog Devices Inc., an American multinational semiconductor company specializing in data conversionsignal processing and power management technology. This article is intended for students who have subject in filter designing.

The first part of this article contains basic concepts of filtering which consists of  passive filters and active filters theories, filter transfer function, and Butterworth filter. Next, the step-by-step operating procedure for using this tool, explained thoroughly, is presented. This is then followed by a design example of an active low-pass 4th order Buterworth filters utilising passive component resistors , capacitors , and operational amplifiers. The filter was designed using Sallen-Key topology, which is an electronic filter topology usually used to implement second-order active filters. Students can then re-check the filter results that have been designed automatically. Checks are carried out using the equations and theories in filtering theory. At the end, it can be shown that the automatically designed filter, including its components, is in agreement with the results obtained using filter calculations.
