Sintetis porous carbon dilakukan pada temperatur kamar dan tanpa aktivasi. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk memperoleh material porous carbon dengan metode sederhana, menentukan porositas porous carbon yang dihasilkan dan mengetahui kemampuan adsorptivitasnya terhadap zat warna pada proses bleaching minyak kelapa sawit kasar (CPO). Porous carbon dibuat dengan cara menambahkan natrium silikat ke dalam larutan gula (sukrosa) yang selanjutnya dilakukan penambahan asam sulfat pekat dan pengadukan hingga homogen. Setelah campuran dingin, kemudian ditambahkan HF 1%, dicuci hingga netral dan dipanaskan pada suhu 120°C selama 2 jam. Produk yang dihasilkan kemudian dikarakterisasi menggunakan spektrofotometer FTIR, X-Ray diffraction dan surface area analyzer . Selanjutnya porous carbon yang dihasilkan dicobakan sebagai agen pemucat ( bleaching agent ) pada minyak kelapa sawit mentah (CPO). Disimpulkan bahwa porous carbon yang terbentuk memiliki kemiripan dengan karbon aktif, sedangkan penambahan silica template dapat meningkatkan porositas porous carbon yang dihasilkan. Porous carbon dengan rasio sukrosa dan natrium silikat sebanyak 20:15 memiliki luas permukaan spesifik sebesar 155,90 m 2 /g dan jari-jari pori rata-rata sebesar 1,4019 Ǻ.
