Pelayaran dan perdagangan misalnya, juga telah berkembang dengan berbagai macam bentuk dan tipe. Oleh karena itu, Indonesia dapat pula disebut sebagai kawasan kepulauan ( insular region ) yang paling luas di dunia. Indonesia memiliki pulau paling banyak di dunia, yaitu sekitar 18.108 pulau baik besar maupun kecil.
