Pemisahan garam dari kotoran masih menjadi masalah terutama ion pengotor Ca 2+ dan Mg 2+ . Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk membandingkan metode penguapan dan pengendapan dengan penambahan gas HCl pada pemurnian garam dan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penambahan amonium karbonat (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 dalam penghilangan ion Ca 2+ dan Mg 2+ dalam pemurnian garam. Metode terbaik ditentukan dengan membandingkan hasil yang diperoleh antara metode penguapan garam dan metode pengendapan dengan penambahan gas HCl, yang sebelumnya telah direkristalisasi dengan menambahkan pengikat pengotor seperti CaO, Ba(OH) 2 dan (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 . Penghilangan Ca 2+ dan Mg 2+ dilakukan dengan menambahkan (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 dengan variasi volume 0,8; 1,6; 2,4; 3,2 dan 4 mL. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemurnian dengan metode penambahan gas HCl menghasilkan kadar NaCl yang lebih tinggi yaitu 99,52% (garam krosok) dan 99,25% (garam Bledug kuwu) sedangkan metode penguapan menghasilkan 98,53% (garam krosok) dan 98,70% (Bledug kuwu garam). Konsentrasi pengotor Ca 2+ dan Mg 2+ terendah diperoleh pada penambahan (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 yaitu 3,2 ml 8,6 ppm (garam krosok) dan 9,04 ppm Ca 2+ (garam Bledug kuwu).
