Seperti yang telah diketahui, identitas film yang dibuat di tanah air pada masa kolonial hingga pendudukan Jepang, memiliki cerita yang tidak jelas karena dianggap tiruan dari film Cina, Amerika, ataupun India. Pada awal 1950-an rasa nasionalisme rakyat Indonesia bangkit kembali. Penduduk kota yang mengungsi ke desa-desa akibat perang, mulai kembali dan membutuhkan hiburan. Hal ini, mendorong maraknya produksi film Indonesia. Perusahaan film milik Tionghoa mulai bangkit kembali, begitupun dengan kaum pribumi. Inilah merupakan awal dari pertumbuhan perfilman nasional di Indonesia.
