Kontaminasi ion logam dalam larutan dapat dikurangi dengan adsorpsi menggunakan gel kitosan. Gel kitosan diperoleh dengan melarutkan serbuk kitosan dalam asam asetat. Adanya gugus amina (-NH2) dan hidroksil (-OH) pada kitosan dapat berfungsi sebagai pengikat ion Fe(III) dan Cd(II). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuat gel kitosan dan mengaplikasikan sebagai adsorben ion Fe(III) dan Cd(II) dengan menentukan pH optimum adsorpsi, kapasitas adsorpsi maksimum, dan selektifitas gel kitosan terhadap adsorpsi ion Fe(III) dan Cd(II) dengan variasi pH. Serbuk kitosan dianalisis dengan FTIR untuk menentukan derajat deasetilasi. Gel yang terbentuk digunakan sebagai adsorben Fe(III) dan Cd(II). pH optimum adsorpsi ion Fe(III) dan Cd(II) ditentukan dengan melakukan variasi pH pada 2,8, 3, 4, 5, dan 6. Kapasitas adsorpsi maksimum gel kitosan ditentukan dengan melakukan variasi konsentrasi pada 10 ppm, 30 ppm, 60 ppm, 100 ppm, dan 150 ppm, kemudian hasilnya diinterpretasikan dengan isoterm Langmuir, dan selektifitas gel kitosan terhadap ion Fe(III) dan Cd(II) ditentukan dengan melakukan variasi pH larutan campuran Fe(III) dan Cd(II). Hasil penelitian yang diperoleh adalah gel kitosan dengan ukuran pori sebesar 0,9615-3,2692 μm dari serbuk kitosan yang memiliki derajat deasetilasi 65,53%, pH optimum adsorpsi ion Fe(III) pada pH 4, sedangkan pH optimum adsorpsi ion Cd(II) pada pH 5. Kapasitas adsorpsi maksimum gel kitosan terhadap ion Fe(III) dan Cd(II) masing-masing sebesar 11,574 mg/g dan 8,446 mg/g.
